Elements of Modern C++ Style (i.e. C++11)
Here's a very helpful and informative blog post by Herb Sutter about some of the key new language features of C++11. I really recommend it to current CGT students, as there's a good chance it will start seeing adoption in the field in the next few years (i.e. by the time you graduate and get a job). If you know it in advance then I reckon you'll have better employability potential:

SIGGRAPH proper starts tomorrow. Meanwhile, its day 2 of the co-located conferences Computational Aesthetics (CAe), Sketch Based Interfaces and Modelling (SBIM) and Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering (NPAR). Site here: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/conference/cae-sbim-npar-2011/
The NPAR work is probably the most interesting (for me anyway), including a range of work that create NPAR images and video…

"Tomorrow's Office": the paperless, computer-"less" office
As you may know, I am currently working in a summer placement. I can now reveal that this is in one of the many offices in Glasgow City Chambers. These old-fashioned offices and corridors will soon become a thing of the past...
The council is about to implement a dramatic project called Tomorrow's Office. The…

First thoughts on a new job
The first week of my new job has drawn to a close, and I thought I'd share a few thoughts on it. Perhaps this will help folks get a better idea of what to expect from some parts of the computing industry.
I'm working as a software engineer at a small company (<10 day-to-day employees), and it's developing a virtual environment medical training system. It's called Vertual if you want to check it out. It's not games…

"May you live in interesting times" is an old Chinese blessing and curse! As I get older I keep trying to cast this one off, but it lingers like an irn bru stain on a white rug.
A couple of things happened that I have been reflecting upon. I went down to Newport University in Wales where I externally examine, to find they have closed the Computing Department. It was like arriving in Nagasaki sometime late in 1945. One day it was there, the next it wasn't. And they won a…

Calling all IT experts: is my summer job unethical?
This is a message for all WoSGamers members who might know a thing or two about proper IT practice in the workplace:
I am temporarily employed by a certain council as a "Seasonal Worker" (I cannot name names). So far, my work has been focussed on reducing paper waste and obsolete files on their public server. I probably shouldn't be saying all this, but I am very worried that I could be in a Set-Up.…

Stop! Delta Time
One of the most important aspects of designing and implementing a game is dealing with time. Time is exceptionally important in modern video-games especially if you want your game to run consistently across different types of hardware.
Back in the old-days most games were CPU dependent, meaning that if the game was run on a faster or slower machine, then it would directly affect the speed in-which things updated. For instance, say we have a character that updates every 10…

My old trumpet tutor used to say, "When you fluff a note, don't hide it; I want to see the blood running down the wall. Then continue playing as if nothing happened!"
Today I canned Route 77. Disappointed? To bl**d* true, I am! So, as I spent much of today…

This Is The End, My Only Friend, The End
Semester 2
At first I was afraid, I was petrified, kept thinking how are we ever going to finish this game on time, but now the game has been tested and we were proved wrong, the game was strong (8) ......infact it kicked ass if im being truly honest.
It has been a stressful and challenging semester, filled with panic, laughs, involuntary bowel movements and in…

The one blog to rule them all or simply a relfective blog
Another semester down, the year finished and what a semester it has been. Carrying on from last semester Project Sewer boy has been a riotous series of events of ups and downs and lots of stress. From the design process of last semester to the actual creation of the game was well, scary. Having an idea on paper is simple and easily done, but to go “Okay we need a 3D model with a 3rd person camera working.” This is very different indeed.

Week 24! Shepard ain't got nuttin on me.
Finally the last week!!! Its funny thinking back of how stressed we all were just a short while ago. The play testing in week 23 was really the last thing that we had to do for this project other than get the screencaps, vidcaps, personal reflections etc. Which was to be finished this week. I've taken recent screencaps of the model renders to be uploaded on the site along with my finished blogs.
So happy that everythings finished for this year now. Actually have some plans…

Week 23!!
With less than two days left before the game presentation i had still yet to complete a floating alien head. I attempted to quickly make a new floating head, which barely took me long at all but the challenges came later on in production when it came to creating the hair. I honestly for the life of me can't remember the actual problem so i figured at the last minute to attempt to just re-edit the original floating head, which ended up working better than i could've hoped. I don't even…

CloudAccess under attack
The host for my personal website, cloudaccess.net, suffered a dDos attack yesterday. From 16:15 to 22:15 I received 6 emails from them updating me on the situation, with the last email informing that while the attack is still ongoing, their service was back online ... beat that Sony!
While this obviously isn't as bad as the attack on the PSN, it does show that some companies still care about their customers, and actually keep them informed of the situation as it…
