Ah yeah I remember now. > < I've been working a little with python recently. It's quite a nice language. Looking at Lua as well.

Unity3D supports 3 languages: JavaScript, C#, Boo( python derivative ). Which compiles down to native code. Using the Mono( Open Source .NET ) also makes it cross-platform.

I meant to add (Since editing isn't working for me) that as far as I'm aware Unity doesn't support native code although I could be wrong. It is good for iPhone apps though, although you could argue whether they're actually making any reasonable de...

It's more its lack of flexibility. Also it only uses scripting rather than actual native code. Web games wise I really think it has amazing potential and is far superior to Flash although sadly I don't see it overtaking simply because of the lack ...

I'd be nit-picky with the use of the word 'real'. In games, as in many fields, there is a 'was', and 'is' and a 'will be'. For example, with MS and Apple going tablet the future may be hand-held, open source, cloud and high-bandwidth streaming. Me...

Yes, Derek. I can do a great line in my all-time favourite language, Algol: // the main program (this is a comment) BEGIN FILE F (KIND=REMOTE); EBCDIC ARRAY E [0:11]; REPLACE E BY "HELLO WORLD!"; WHILE TRUE DO BEGIN WRITE (F, *, E); END; END.

I did some research on Unity3D for a job interview. It's nothing like a real game engine. It's more for web and phone games.

Fungal Fantasy (Flash)

Just a little project to see how easy it was going to be to redo the 'game' (I use the term loosely) I created in Scratch in Flash.

I dont possess a lot (any?) artistic skill so the graphics are fairly terrible, theres still a few bugs in the logic, some animation syncing problems, no sound currently (may get around to adding some eventually) and you can't win but 'twas fun.

If I can find some free time I'll finish it I seem to have less time now than I did when I was in uni :s… Continue

Ta. I reckon it will be 6 hours at £8.17 per hour demonstrator rate. Don't expect paid on the day! It takes a few weeks to sort these things out. I'll send out a form to complete asap. Have a look at some of the E3 coverage to get an idea what Atevo is bringing along, or just talk to him directly. I'll chair the panel if Derek isn't keen, and we'll just caht about what E3 said. And, help sproggies use Scratch ...

Yeh. We can't do everything as some things - e.g. Maya - aren't easily replaced. But we could use Eclipse IDE for Java, Python for Google Apps, etc. I reckon this year's big project is to move as much as poss to Open Source/Freeware to give us a lot more freedom. Next year I'd like to crack the 'what is the best machine' problem.

The Uni has a policy of getting rid of labs, which I agree with, but we need to change them to better learning & working areas. I reckon we need a working group of lab planners of staff and students: wanna join (in principle)?

Yeh. it might grow into something different. We have gathered in quite a bit of stuff which, at least, is eye-wear that the labs might benefit from (I do need to get these posters fixed.) The uni has a policy, apparently, that labs should be revisted. I agree that they would be better as learning spaces rather than a gathering-in of obsolete junk PCs (which is what they have become) that are hard to finance, upgrade, etc.

We're off-subject now, but what if I suggested every student bought a laptop and a 3G dingle. I reckon that would cost effectively £10 per month. We don't ask people to buy books or anything else ( I remember sending £100 on books for a 2nd year subject at uni and having to buy lab coats and animal torturing equipment at cost too.)

The idea is, say, get a deal with Apple for MacBooks (or Toshiba) at, say, £500. This would last years 1-2. Plus '3' 3G dongle at £100per annum for 16Gb. Sell off the MacBook at end of year 2 (still worth a pretty penny) and buy a new one for years 3-4.

Scott,

Been busy marking. I note that things aren't moving very quickly with the SVGA. I had a chat with people at the Media School who are planning a video archive of stuff that might get lost and suggested we might combine. We should get together later this month and chat.
