Just put in a bid for Unreal Tournament III for doing game level design. Some good books out now on this. Also, we decided, as the image is no up to 35Gb to take the boot-from CD option for using Linux on the labs this year. Comments on either proposal?

Hi Ross,

Do you have any experience with Blender's fluid simulator?
I have read some guides while working on an animation for college, but if you have any advice, it would be very useful (especially if it involves speeding up bakes).

Ross. You've gone uncharacteristically quiet. Is everything OK? I'd like you to consider taking a role in our new games entrepreneurship project. No pressure, just don't want my two most able - but in dagner of getting bored - 2nd year students (i.e. thee and Alex) to go to seed when there is a potentially great thing you could steer in the offing. Txt me on 07882226569 if you want to pop in for a chat. I'm in all day Friday and Tuesday onwards next week.

Also, I need your advice on Quake 3!

Ta. Its my son, the historian, who can't get VISTA to talk to WiFi. I view current WiFi a bit like 1st gen mobiles: flakey. He's in Manchester so will probably just buy a PC and plug it into the router via an ethernet cable. I hate advising friends and relatives on computers as the consequences of failure are emotional disturbing! Any comment on the Zeebu (see seperate forum discussion.)

Wow, you seem to be pretty handy with Blender. I'm hopefully joining CGT in September, maybe you could show me a thing or two?

COMP08035 Computer Games Design
Session 2008-9 Semester 1
Coursework 1 - Analysing Video Games

Student: B00138464 Ross Forshaw
Overall Grade: B1 (65%)
Comments:
* overall - the reviews of the FPS titles are excellent, and I do like how they show how the technology improved and impacted upon the growing genre; the reviews of the other games are weaker, perhap could have been helped by bringing them together as ‘cutesey’ games and then showing the growth of cuteseyness?; but the way you showed the FPS genres is worth the grade awarded.
* Wolfenstein 3D - technically its ‘id Software’; I didn’t know about the level design pictures!; I agree, its was fun because it was killing nazis
* Doom - yep, Doom is the engine; I recognise the screen-shot ...; I agree that there is something very satisfying about killing things in a video game, not sure what it is really, but it is fun and feels quite harmless in certain cases (e.g. Wolf3D and Doom)
* Quake 1 - I appreciate that you are showing the growth of this genre by this, the third, review; the use of imagery shows how things have come on since the two previous FPS titles reviewed; you mentioned the importance of the engine in Doom, and how by Quake 1 it became iconic
* Soldier of Fortune - good use of imagery to break up the text; this gives a feel of the review being longer, but still allowing the reader to remember and contextualise what you are saying; images might be smaller ...
* Lemmings - ahhh, a change from FPS; the review doesn’t really come alive and show how much fun Lemmings was; perhaps a few more screenshots or a youtube clip would have helped
* Startcraft - short, but Ok for what is there
* Worms - how about a review of Lemmings & Worms together? that way you could talk about this cutesey kind of look’n’feel of imagery and sounds; together they might have made a stronger review
* Crash Bandicoot 2 - good choice of imagery; youtube clip might have helped; good, clear text
