About Me

Die-hard C++ programmer, currently working as a Software Engineer at Vertual Ltd., producing virtual environments to train radiotherapists. Also finishing my PhD at UWS, looking at educational technology and virtual worlds, with a strong HCI slant.

Graduated from CGT at UWS in 2007. Have done a few bits and pieces of work in/around the games industry over the years, but am quite happy working on a medical-related project now.

C++ graphics programming job at Vertual

The company I work for is looking for a new recruit again: http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AEH963/software-engineer We're a small company, based at the University of Hull, developing life size virtual reality medical training systems. It includes some very exciting technology, and there are plenty of meaty programming challenges to get your teeth into. :) There's lots of info about what we do on our new website: …See More

Software development vacancy at Vertual Ltd.

Hi all. Not sure if anybody here will be interested in this, but thought I'd mention it just in case a former CGT-er is looking for work. A vacancy for a software developer has come up at the company I work for (based in Hull). You can check out the details here: http://www.cwjobs.co.uk/JobSeeking/C++-Software-Developer_job52441600 It's important to mention that we're not a games company,…See More

Hope today goes well - I am sure it will! Won't make it ... ran out of energy yesterday and need a day to lie down and take it easy ... Bro' J.

Peter, what time and where will you be about tomorrow? Still haven't resolved this LIBC problem, tried downloading several different SDKs and using the environment settings command to changed the target machine type, still no advance.

Its all just words in my head right now. Still fitting the bits together. Will get back to you once it takes fuller shape. The £33 seems to be the biz next year. The £8.17 demonstratorship has been abolished as has the £24 p/t lecturer, all to be replaced by the £33 assistant lecturer. Believe it when I see it fully on paper, I expect!

Bro' Peter, saw you at the poster event but got waylaid before I could chat. Would you be up for helping with a lab or two next year? I need help with intro to games (python) and games design (quake3 probably). Lots of notes, hopefully good. I understand the rate will be £33 per hour for the 2/3/4 hours per module per week. All at Paisley campus.

Bless you, bro'. if there is a reward for a cup of water, so it scales up for building His church. One of my former CGT students from Abertay is now reading for a BD at UWS in the Baptist College. Kinda strange all us theological computer scientists ...

My doctorate at Edinburgh is kinda odd: its into Comp Sci as a subject and how it changes; its a social sciences qualitative case study; its actually a philosophical study into the nature of knowledge; its all taking me far, far too long to do (6 years and counting!) My main inspiration 0 apart from JC - is a chap called Polanyi, a Christian philosopher whose writing actually make sense (wittgenstein eat yer heart out!)

Have a blessed time over the nativity period.

Oooh. Another Christian! And someone else doing an educational PhD. I'm almost done with my EdD from Edinburgh: looking into tha nature of knowledge in Comp Sci and how it is hard to teach. I was in St Andrews Baptsit (St Andrews, FIfe, that is) but now attend Brisbane Evangelical (BEC) in Largs.

Bless!

Bro' John.

Elements of Modern C++ Style (i.e. C++11)

Here's a very helpful and informative blog post by Herb Sutter about some of the key new language features of C++11. I really recommend it to current CGT students, as there's a good chance it will start seeing adoption in the field in the next few years (i.e. by the time you graduate and get a job). If you know it in advance then I reckon you'll have better employability potential:

First thoughts on a new job

The first week of my new job has drawn to a close, and I thought I'd share a few thoughts on it. Perhaps this will help folks get a better idea of what to expect from some parts of the computing industry.

I'm working as a software engineer at a small company (<10 day-to-day employees), and it's developing a virtual environment medical training system. It's called Vertual if you want to check it out. It's not games…

Research volunteers needed (Paisley campus)

Hi everyone,

Some of you will know me from lurking around WoSGamers and the Paisley campus. I'm a CGT graduate, now doing a PhD, and I would like to ask for some volunteers to participate in a research study this week.

Date: Friday 22nd April

Time: 10am (will take approx. 30 mins)

Venue: E116b (Paisley)

It just involves using some virtual world software in the lab, and answering a short survey about your…

Space is key

Crafty little game that only uses one button. Not 100% original, but surprisingly engaging for something that uses 2 colours and minimal level design:

Great Gatsby video game

A very random bit of unreleased video game history has apparently surfaced:

http://www.urlesque.com/2011/02/15/great-gatsby-nintendo-nes-game-rom

It's a NES game ostensibly based on the novel "The Great Gatsby". The link includes a playable ROM in Flash format. Worth a look if you liked the old style side-scrolling adventure. Owned a few myself, once upon a…
