A game that IMO combines two disparate genres to create something somewhat new succesfully is Savage Battle for Newearth which had one player acting as the commander with an RTS overview able to issue commands and build structures and the other pl...

Curious that you mention that, because I remember a game, must have been about three or four years back now, called "Rise and Fall: Civilisations at War". It used a concept called Hero Mode, where the user presses a button and they are given Third...

Doesn't observation precede interpretation as a necessary step for pyschology? I agree with your opinion on how the analysis of the mind and speculation of what to expect can sometimes precede the observations or indeed the observer therefore quan...

I think genre is primarily about expected conventions, and it's really important for developers and users to work together to figure out what those conventions are. That allows for transfer of gameplay skills across titles, reducing the learning c...

We seem to have inherited a set of classifications that were randomly established a couple of decades back. Firstly, that aint very long ago. Secondly, a lot *has* changed in that short time. For RPG, should we read Fantasy? And what is a free-roa...

What a strange question I know...but what does genre mean to us as gamers? For movie/book lovers you have your action, dramas, thrillers etc. and for your music appreciators you have blues, country, rock, metal (sub divide you may its still metal)...

The terms anthropology and psychology were both coined in the 16th century, but quite separately. My issue with psychology is that it is an interpretive subject, whereas anthropology is an observational one. Psychology is a subject which issues in...

Develop, develop, develop. If in doubt, develop. Every minute as game developers we are required to be constantly moving forward but to always remember where we came from. I think that video is a good illustration of this kind of thinking. He use...

@Kalakian hahahaha Aye to that! Doesn't Anthropology stem from Pyschology? I always considered it as a subdivision and a more specific approach to how we as humans are and are always going to be "One". The mind rules all :D.

It certainly seems that the escapism and immersion in games is what truly seperates us from other creative media industry. Something thats stuck with me for quite some time is that players play games with their mind and not their hands. The immers...

You don't believe in psychology? May as well say you don't believe in something like maths or computing ... it's something that exists, not something for you to believe in :P

I don't believe in Psychology, but prefer Anthropology. People is people is people and we too is people (copyright DrJ 2009). There is a seeking after challenge and success that runs right through the genomes. And there are others: like a mother's...

Fellow gamers

First post woo! ^_^!

I feel I should share my thoughts a bit more on here and immerse in the lively community. It is also pretty relevant to you guys and gals! What I'm asking is when it comes down to it all, to the very essence and creation. Why do we play games? It amazes me how many people are actually afraid to play games like Silent Hill because they border on the obscene and yet others (myself included) actually enjoy being scared out of their wits time and time again. However on t… Continue

'hallowed halls' ... mmm. A bit scabby in reality, but working on it. If you come with a focus of working hard then things should be OK. But, beware - hoenstly - it can be tough and even boring at times. The tough bits are programming and maths, the boring bits are the abstract comp sci stuff. The good bits are getting to write games.

If you've got questions about the courses we run you can always bug us more directly here too! Someone asked me about programming, so I pointed them away from me to Kalakian and Daniel Livingstone. I am good at pointing people at other people when questions get hard :-)
