Registration is now live for next year’s student Open Days! There will be three separate days on Friday 2ndMarch, Friday 23rd March and Friday 30th March 2012. Please encourage your students to apply, having read the details below!

Blitz runs the Open Days as part of an ongoing initiative to reflect the continuing need of the UK’s creative technology sector to recruit the best creative talent of the next generation. As in previous year, the days will offer a broad introduction to the enormous range of skills and talents involved in creating games, as well as a studio tour and an opportunity to talk in depth with and get firsthand feedback from experienced development staff.

The registration form is here: www.BlitzGamesStudios.com/open-days/registration/.

The first two Open Days are for 2nd and final year students interested in a career in any of the main development disciplines (2D Art, 3D Art, Animation, Audio, Game Design, Programming). Students from any course are welcome to apply, as long as a work sample answering the brief is submitted.

It has become a Blitz custom to run one day aimed at particular disciplines, so Friday 30th March will be devoted to game design and programming students from any year (again, students are welcome from any course, as long as a work sample is submitted). This might seem like an odd pairing, but as we all know, good programmers are always in short supply and with the number of game platforms expanding again, they are in more and more demand. Meanwhile game design has been a traditionally tricky subject for universities and colleges to teach, partly because we in the industry has struggled to define and communicate the skills we want. Perhaps due to this, over the years the number of game designers applying to attend the Open Days has been curiously low. This is worrying as new ways of playing make demands beyond traditional console design and new audiences hunger for innovative and exciting games to play.

This Open Day therefore will feature content for programmers and designers, with opportunities to mix and communicate between the two so that the interface of code and design is properly explored.

For more details on what the Open Days offer, please see here: www.BlitzGamesStudios.com/open-days/information/

If you think that your students would benefit from knowing more about their chosen career, these days are absolutely for them. Please note that anyone wanting to attend one of our Open Days has to complete a work sample and send it to us – this is because we get a huge number of applications and need some way to sift them so that the places go to really deserving people! But we always try to pick a really good mix of people with potential and talent, so please do encourage your students to apply.

Details of the work briefs that are sent out can be found here: www.BlitzGamesStudios.com/open-days/sample-briefs/.

Please note – if they have applied before but didn’t get the chance to attend, they are welcome to apply again; however, if they have attended a previous Open Day, they will not be eligible to attend again in 2012.

It is also worth noting that project management is not generally an entry level position in the games industry and the role is dependent on having a broad range of development experience. We do cover project management as part of the day’s presentations, but we don’t accept applications from students citing project management as their primary discipline.

We do not cover travel expenses, but the days are otherwise free to attend and lunch and refreshments are provided.

The closing date for submissions is Monday 9th January 2012.

You may recall emails earlier this year from me, promoting the Saltire Foundation internships.   The application process for the 2012 programme is changing, and the process opens this month on Oct 18th and runs until Oct 28th with interviews thereafter.   As a reminder, the interns are placed with leading multinational organisations around the world (this year our students were in Boston, New York and Australia).  In addition, this year there will also be Scottish and UK based placements, which might make the programme attractive to some of our students unable to commit to a summer abroad.  In all internships, students spend 8 weeks carrying out project based work with other interns and company staff.  There are a range of placements open to students of all disciplines with business, science and engineering placements featuring heavily.

In an attempt to build on our success in recent years, the careers service will be running information sessions on all campuses (details below).  All applicants MUST:

-          Be available for an 8 week placement from June 2012

-          Be in 3rd year, returning for Honours

The international scheme, travel and accommodation remains funded as well as a £150 p/w stipend and applications are again submitted online at www.saltirefoundation.com  Interns in Scotland receive a £250 p/w stipend to cover accommodation and travel.

Here are flyers relating to the info sessions at each campus - Paisley.pdf, Ayr.pdf, hamilton.pdf, Dumfries.pdf and would ask that you promote these sessions as well as the Saltire scheme generally to 3rd year students on Honours programmes.  The feedback from our successful students this year was that it was a life changing experience, and it would be great if UWS could build on that success.  For what it might be worth, the Saltire co-ordinator commented that one of our successful interns this year was one of the best candidates of the entire group (across all universities) at application stage so high praise indeed!

The information session details are as follows:

Ayr                         10th Oct                 1pm – 2pm (GT3)

Dumfries             19th Oct                 12pm – 1pm Rutherford/McCowan R149

Hamilton              12th Oct                12pm – 1pm Almada 715

Paisley                  12th Oct                 3pm – 4pm (L209)

The Paisley session will be hosted by successful interns, so it would be a great opportunity for students to ask questions about the application process and the overall experience, even if they have already attended the info session at their own campus.  If you have any questions relating to the internship scheme or the work we are doing to support it, don’t hesitate to contact me.
