Lab Notes (Gerry Creechan)
We’ll be using Gamemaker8
GM8 is a fairly straightforward piece of software designed specifically for creating games – that’s the reason why I’ve chosen it. This course is about the game, it’s not a programming course. Students should be judged solely on how good they are at creating a “fun” game. However, GM8 allows some decent functionality to be added. Students, therefore, should be able to display varying degrees of ability.
Assessment
There are three elements to the assessment (detailed written instruction for students later):
1. Each student designs and creates a poster for his/her game (20 marks)
2. Each student designs and creates a CD case cover for his/her game (20 marks)
3. Each student creates an executable version of the game and burns it to CD (60 marks)
Each student should submit physical copies of these to the lecturer (by whatever local means exist) by 16:00 on the Friday of week 11 AND electronic copies of all three elements to Blackboard by 23:59 on the same day.
Marking
As we progress through the course I will supply a slightly detailed marking scheme – I don’t want to tie your hands too much but I do want to ensure uniformity by giving as much help as is required.
Blackboard
I’ll create a Blackboard site and allow self-enrolment – the pin will be 07028 (zero-seven-zero-two-eight). The site will contain the zipped tutorials as well as links to them on the Gamemaker website.
I’ll only create one Bb site, so if you need to use it to get a message to your students please head the message with a very, very, very clear statement of which students should take note (we’ve already had incidents of classes being rearranged on one campus and student on another campus blaming their non attendance on this!).
